CAUSES

An anal fistula usually arises from a perianal abscess in the intersphincteric space of the anal canal from infection of anal gland. As the anal gland is situated deep to the internal sphincter its duct passes through the internal sphincter to open in the crypts of Morgagni situated on dentate line. Due to tone of the internal sphincter the duct cannot aptly discharge contents of the gland. A number of factors can increase the risk of anal fistula, such as

  1. The anal region is infected or injured.

  2. A defective healing process when an anal abscess (pus filled mass) is drained of pus

  3. Several other disorders may also cause fistula-in-anus, including ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, tuberculosis, and colloid carcinoma of the rectum.

  4. Cancer of the rectal cavity treated with radiation

  5. A chronic diarrheal disease

To detect the entire tract and internal opening of anal fistula, the following tests are recommended-
